Hedge Cutting

Hedges can be made from a wide variety of trees and shrubs, from Conifers to broad-leaved Beech. Just as it is important to prune your trees and shrubs at particular times of year (based on the individual characteristics of the trees/shrubs in question), there is also a best time to trim a hedge.

Bird nesting season should always be considered when trimming hedges. It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

It is therefore imperative that if you have to trim your hedge in between March and August that you do an extensive survey of the hedge to make sure there are no nesting birds. If you do discover a nest, wait until at least mid-August until checking again to see if it still active. Only once the nest is redundant can the work be carried out.

Boundary hedges can quickly grow to overhang the street or pavement. These should be trimmed to ensure they do not impede access by pedestrians. Even regularly trimmed hedges can gradually get bigger over the years; most deciduous and broadleaved evergreen hedges can be successfully renovated but some (including many conifer hedges) are best replaced when overgrown

At Smith Grayson we can advise you on the best time to trim your hedge, and our skilled team have many years of experience to help ensure that your hedges are given the best cut and finish possible.

Site Clearance

Our site and land clearance service provides complete tree, vegetation and rubbish removal to domestic and commercial clients, trusts, government organisations, and councils. We work hard to ensure that all site clearance projects are completed in a timely and professional manner, with all waste removed from the site and disposed of (or recycled) responsibly and safely.

Japanese Knotweed Treatment

Here at Smith Grayson, we are able to offer specialist removal of Japanese Knotweed.  This invasive, fast-growing, non-native plant can grow up to one metre per month and grow through walls, tarmac and concrete. Here are some very valid reasons to begin removal of this dangerous plant as soon as possible:

  • It can decrease your property value significantly.
  • If it spreads to neighbouring property, you may be prosecuted.
  • Treatment can take 3 years, so it’s worth starting the removal process now!
  • It suppresses all other growth around it, effectively choking other plants.
  • The longer it’s left, the more rampant Japanese Knotweed will become.

Japanese knotweed needs specialist treatment as it is classed as controlled waste. Digging it out won’t solve the problem as the roots (rhizomes) can grow 3 metres deep. It is also an offence to dispose of knotweed and the contaminated soil in your garden waste or household waste bin.

We can offer a cost effective programme of treatment to eradicate your Japanese Knotweed.
