Landscape Gardening West Midlands

Landscape Gardening West Midlands

Landscape Gardening is described in the Oxford Dictionary as ‘the art and practice of laying out grounds in a way which is ornamental or which imitates natural scenery’; it’s so much more than grass cutting, which is why you need a team of qualified and experienced landscape gardeners on the case if you want to make a real and positive impact on your outdoor space.

Take turf maintenance, for example – even this, done properly, involves far more than just a lawn mower and a strimmer.  Formal lawns may need scarification (the removal of ‘thatch’ – dead turf material – from a lawn) in order to help essential nutrients into the grass roots.  Lawns may have an issue with moss that needs to be treated chemically by experienced and qualified professionals, and patches of poor-quality lawn may need to be re-seeded (using the correct seed) or completely re-turfed at the appropriate time of year for maximum efficacy.

Tree care is another area that needs a specialist skillset, which is why all of our tree surgeons are trained to NPTC level and have completed courses on chainsaw maintenance, cross cutting and tree felling, tree climbing and aerial rescue operations, and the use of chainsaws from a rope and harness.  Even ‘basic’ tasks like trimming, thinning and pruning require specialist knowledge about the characteristics of different tree species in order to ensure that the tree(s) respond positively to the treatment.  Specialist help is often required too if work needs carrying out on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) put in place by the Local Planning Authority to protect it from deliberate damage and destruction.  In these cases, it is essential to seek the planning authority’s permission before carrying out any remedial work, and seeking assistance from a qualified tree surgeon can help to clarify exactly what work is required and why it is needed. Working on a protected tree without permission can result in a fine of up to £2500, with penalties up to £20,000 if a tree is destroyed deliberately and without permission (if convicted in a magistrates’ court) – for more information, take a look at Part 8 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
